Solar PV to EV charging works by utilising solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate electricity. The electricity generated is then used to charge an electric vehicle (EV).

The electricity generated by the PV panels is converted into alternating current (AC), which is then converted into direct current (DC) by an inverter.

The DC current is then used to charge the battery of the EV. The amount of energy generated by the PV panels will depend on the size of the panels and the amount of sunlight they receive.

How does solar charging work?

Solar charging an electric car at home works by connecting the car to an external charging station, which is typically installed on the side of a house, or in a garage.

The charging station is then connected to a solar array, which collects the energy from the sun and stores it in a battery, which is used to charge the car. The car can be charged either through a direct connection to the solar array, or via an energy storage system.

Energy storage system?

That’s right.

An energy storage system is a massive battery installed with your solar panels that stores excess energy for use anytime you need it.

The energy storage system is usually integrated into an inverter and works by taking the excess energy generated by the solar panels and storing it for later use.

The stored energy can then be used to power your home or charge an electric vehicle when the solar panels are not generating enough energy.

This helps to reduce the reliance on grid power, which can often be expensive. Some energy storage systems can also be used to provide backup power during a power outage.

How many solar panels do you need to charge an electric car?

The number of solar panels needed to charge an electric car depends on the size of the vehicle’s battery, the power output of the solar panels, and the amount of sunlight available.

In general, most solar panel installations are 3kW to 6kW systems, with a 3kW system typically requiring six to ten panels depending on their specification.

It’s crucial to note that neither of these power outputs can match the power of a an EV charger connected directly to your home electricity supply. However, they can certainly supplement power consumption and lower your EV charging costs.

Charging your EV at home with solar panels benefits

  • Cost Savings: Charging your EV with solar panels is a great way to save money on fuel costs. The electricity generated by the solar panels is free, meaning you’ll save money each month on your energy bills.
  • Environmentally Friendly: By using solar power to charge your EV, you are reducing your carbon footprint and helping to reduce air pollution. Solar power is a renewable energy source, meaning it does not produce any harmful emissions.
  • Convenience: Solar PV to EV charging is a convenient way to charge your EV. You won’t need to worry about finding a charging station or waiting in line to charge your EV. All you need to do is plug in your EV and let the solar panels do the rest at home.

How much does a solar panel installation cost?

The cost of a solar panel installation will vary depending on the type and size of the system, the complexity of the job, and the installer you choose.

Generally speaking, a typical domestic system in the UK costs between £4,000 and £12,000, which may or may not include a battery storage system.

You also have to add on the cost of the EV charger installation, which will probably set you back between £800 and £1,500 depending on the model.
